From Tokyo to Azerbaijan: Oyan Nazariani’s Goal to Develop a Coach Development System

A coach’s development shapes the future of the athletes they guide. Remaining open to new knowledge, reflecting on practice and sharing experience are essential parts of that process. For Oyan Nazariani, participation in Japan’s NCDA programme is an opportunity to bring these ideas into his work in Azerbaijani wrestling.

In July 2026, Nazariani attended the programme’s first face-to-face session in Tokyo, exploring international approaches to coach education and development. His participation was supported by the Azerbaijan National Olympic Committee and the International Olympic Committee’s Olympic Solidarity programme.

His central goal is to contribute to the introduction of a coach development system within the Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation. The ambition is to support continuous professional learning, help coaches translate knowledge into everyday practice and strengthen the exchange of experience.

Adapting international learning to the local context will be an important part of this work. Azerbaijan’s established coaching traditions, the needs of different age groups and the realities of daily training should inform how such a system develops.

The Tokyo experience provided an opportunity to consider this goal from a broader perspective. The next step is to turn learning into practical proposals that could support a structured and sustained approach to coach development within the federation.

For Nazariani, the lasting value of the programme will be the contribution it can make to Azerbaijani wrestling.
